Spiny Dogfish
These sharks are awesome. They can grow up to 51” and live for up to 100 years!!
The Pacific Spiny Dogfish pose no real threat to humans but they do have a secret weapon; a venomous spine on the front on each dorsal fin. These spines protect them from other predators like other sharks, humans, and even whales.
They have 5 gills and a special feature called a spiracle located behind the eye of the sharks giving oxygen to the eye and brain. They also can use this to breath while resting.
You can find these beauties at a range of depths, especially during the summer months. I’ve spotted a number of these over the past few dives including the latest buzzing past my face at 20ft, while doing a safety stop in the shallows.
These beautiful fish glide through the water as if they are flying while shimmering with colours of copper, gold, green and blue. Truly a remarkable fish to see on any dive.
